Description:Modern materials research would be unthinkable without the analytical tools now available for studying the structure and dynamics of materials from the subatomic to the macroscopic level. Amongst these, neutron scattering occupies a prominent position, given the particular properties of the neutron as a probe. Recent progress in instrumentation has reinforced the role of neutron scattering, making it accessible to an even wider range of users. In my presentation I will briefly introduce modern neutron scattering as a tool for materials investigations. I will illustrate the scientific potential of neutron scattering, highlighting recent scientific results. The topics will range from fundamental questions in magnetism to structural biology. To make the talk accessible to a broad audience I will place the accent on the scientific impact of the experiments, avoiding technical details.
