Yuki Nogami received his B. Sc. and D. Sc. from Kyoto University where he studied under Hideki Yukawa. Following postdoctoral research at the National Research Council, Ottawa, and Battersea College, England, he came to McMaster in 1964. He has held visiting research positions in Brazil, France, Germany and Japan.
Dr. Nogami’s research covers a wide range of topics with emphasis on
the interplay between nuclear and particle physics. He has worked on hypernuclei,
nuclear three-body forces, charge symmetry breaking nuclear interactions, relativistic
effects in nuclear physics, hadron structures, etc. One of the problems in which
he has been interested in recent years is concerned with atomic ionization caused
by nuclear alpha or beta decay process. This an old problem is still beset with
a certain paradox. There is a similar paradox related to bremsstrahlung due
to the alpha particle emitted by a nucleus. Dr. Nogami is also interested in
the vacuum structure in the presence of strong external interactions. He speculates
on some topological aspects of this problem.
