Simple Atwood Machine
Summary:
- Illustrate constant acceleration with a small difference in mass
Equipment:
- Atwoods double pulley with string (loops on both ends)
- Tall retort stand
- 2 equal weights (250g-500g )
- small additional weights (a few grams)
Location:
- Bin in section 1 labelled "Atwood Machine"
Notes:
- Fairly transportable, although retort stand is a bit awkward.
- Working status: Working
- Safety: Closely monitor moving masses so nothing crashes or falls on somebody's toe!
Description:
- The double pulley system aids visually to separate the two suspended masses. Show that with equal
mass on each side, the system is in equilibrium regardless of the vertical positions. Add a small additional mass (it needs to be enough
to overcome the friction in the system) and observe the acceleration. You can play around with the mass - ideally you achieve something not
too fast, not too slow.
