COM of an Irregular Object

Summary:

• Find the COM of an object using the plumbline method

Equipment:

• Bungee cord and weight for plumbline
• Irregular plywood shape with pre-drawn reference lines
• Optional: Retort stand with 3 pronged clamp to hold support pin
• Balancing post

Location:

• Section 3

Notes:

• Transportable: everything fits in a Ziploc bag except for the retort stand
• If you don't want to bring the retort stand, you can hold the support in your hand
• Working status: Working

Description:

• Demonstrate the 3 hanging positions with the plumbline to demonstrate how the COM was located
• Balance the piece on the support post. There is a slight indentation on one side to help you locate the position, but small adjustments will still likely be required
