Ring with Gap
Summary:
- A ball bearing in a circular horizontal track with a gap
Equipment:
- 20cm diameter copper ring with gap
- Steel ball
Location:
- Bin in section 1 labelled "Circular Motion"
Notes:
- Easily transportable
- Requires doc-cam or overhead projector
- Working status: Working
Description:
-
The section that was removed is the minimum, so that the ball can still
make it out. Place the ring on the overhead projector and flick the
ball. Suggested use: ask the students to vote on what will happen
a) ball stays inside the ring
b) ball hits the end of the ring
c) ball comes out freely.
Note: The Doc Cam may not be a flat surface. You may need to adapt for this. It is
suggested that you place the gap on the 'down' side -
that way gravity helps it to come out of the ring. If done this way, the
speed of the ball is irrelevant and it always works.
