7. Chair: NRC-NSERC Long Range Planning Panel (1998-2000)
I chaired the LRPP that developed Canada’s first comprehensive decadal survey and plan for astronomy and astrophysics for 2000 - 2010. This involved assembling the panel, holding (4) town hall meetings (1998), making presentations at CASCA AGMs (1999, 2000) and to NRC etc, writing the report (The Origins of Structure in the Universe), orchestrating website design (www.casca.ca/lrp), orchestrating the public and government outreach campaign (1999-2000), and creating and serving on the ongoing Coalition for Canadian Astronomy as a member of the Executive Committee. The LRP was strongly endorsed by an International blue-ribbon committee (1999) as well as by all the astronomical funding agencies NSERC, NRC, and CSA. Funds to the amount of $100 M from CSA, and $90 M from NRC, CFI, and NSERC have already been allocated for LRP recommended projects in the present time.
Among the successes of the plan is the implementation of the North America Program in Radio Astronomy (NAPRA) which provides Canadians access to the US national radio astronomy facilities, assigns Canada the role of constructing the critical WIDAR correlator for the Expanded Very Large Array (EVLA), and sets the framework for Canada’s entry into the first world observatory – the Atacama Large Millimetre Array (ALMA). The next big push will be for the LRP recommended Very Large Optical Telescope – currently being proposed for CFI funding, as well as entry into the Square Kilometre Array (SKA) – possibly through a Canadian design, the Large Adaptive Reflector. I have been involved in advising in both of these efforts as well, in my capacity as former LRP chair.
8. Founding Director - Origins Institute:
I am the founding Director of the Origins Institute based within the Faculty of Sciences. The OI is an interdisciplinary research institute that addresses 6 major linked themes in fundamental research: the origin of space and time (particle physics and early universe), the origins of structure in the universe (astronomy: cosmology, galaxies, stars and planets), the origin of the elements (nuclear astrophysics), and the origin of life (astrobiology), the origin of species (biodiversity), and of humanity. We have a group of 40 professors from the Faculty of Science and beyond. The institute has 3 interrelated pillars of activity - origins research; an undergraduate origins specialization; and an Origins Public Lectures Series. The outreach program is based on the Origins Public Lectures that we initiated by the lecture of Sir Martin Rees in 2003 http://origins.mcmaster.ca/.
(i) Research: I am heavily involved in overseeing OI Research activity. This involves a very active visitors and colloquium program which features a major faculty-wide colloquium every week. The OI also hosts a significant number of workshops and conferences – typically one major international conference every 2 years and at least one smaller workshop every other year. Our 3 major conferences so far have been on Darwin’s Legacy (2009), The Origins of Dark Matter (2007) – co-sponsored with the Perimeter Institute, and Astrobiology and the Origins of Life (2005) co-sponsored by the Canadian Space Agency. The OI also sponsors outstanding scientists as Senior Visiting Fellows to visit and work at the OI for a few months, typically as part of their research leaves. The OI also has 2 postdoc in Astrobiology (starting in Fall 2009)
(ii) Origins Research Specialization: I worked on the initial design of this program in collaboration with Jonathon Stone and Alison Sills. This undergraduate program can be entered in the 2nd year. Students must be enrolled in an Honours undergraduate program, and take a total of eight courses to complete the Specialization. In level II, these courses consist of two survey courses over all 6 themes of the institute; in the second year of the program (3rd year university) students take 2 out of 6 specialized courses as well as a senior seminar that covers basic research literature. In the final year, students complete a research thesis in any of the 6 thematic research areas – and follow a research seminar in which they meet with visiting OI colloquium speakers. This program offers training in interdisciplinary science.
(iii) McMaster 3 D Theatre: I spear-headed the creation of the McMaster 3D theatre, whose funding was granted by the VP Admin Karen Belaire of McMaster University, and whose technical development was overseen by the Director of Research and High Performance Computing Support (RHPCS) - Ms. Patricia Monger. After more than 2 years of effort, on and off, the technical issues, computers, programme, etc were finally solved, and the theatre was launched in the Fall of 2006. This played to packed houses. This is shown to be of great promise in public excitement and education and plans are to run our films weekly throughout the year. New resources will see the re-launch of programs, starting in 2009.
(iv) OI Public Lectures: I have been involved in a large amount of educational and public outreach. We have worked hard to ensure that the OI is visible to the public through the OI public lectures. These have run since 2003 and feature about 5 major international lecturers per year. These have been very successful in terms of turnouts (average 300-500 persons or so per event). I have extended this to participation in a number of Café Scientifiques, lectures to University Alumni both in San Francisco and in Hamilton.
RESEARCH INTERESTS
My research is rooted in theoretical and computational studies of:
i) star formation; key physical processes in descending physical scale from giant molecular cloud structure and dynamics, turbulence, filaments, the formation of star clusters as well as globular clusters, the origin of the stellar mass spectrum (known as the initial mass function) down to the formation of individual stars through gravitational collapse, the formation of accretion disks, the origin of protostellar jets and outflows;
ii) planet formation and migration; the formation and migration of Jovian and terrestrial planets in dusty, gaseous protostellar disks is modelled and simulated; origin of the mass-period relation for exoplanets; and
iii) astrobiology - a recent fascinating extension of the work that I have been doing in both star and planet formation - focussing on the formation of biomolecules such as amino acids in protoplanetary disks and their delivery to young terrestrial planets via meteorites and comets.
