No less than 16 of our undergraduate students attended the Canadian Conference for Undergraduate Women in Physics (CCUWIP) this past weekend, which was held this year at the University of Ottawa. In stark contrast to the snow storm and very cold weather outside, the atmosphere at the conference was very warm and supportive. This event provides a wonderful opportunity for attendants to present their research, network and reflect on how to improve diversity in physics. The highlight was a banquet lecture by Donna Strickland, who recently joined the very selective group of women who have won a Nobel Prize in Physics (the only other two being Marie Curie and Maria Goeppert-Mayer).
A special congratulations to the four student winners at the CCUWiP, three of which are McMaster students:
Jessica Speedie won Best Talk for her talk entitled “Telling giant planets from brown dwarfs: an observational test with SPIRou”
Sara Evans won Best Poster for her poster entitled “High-speed preparation of ultra-this uniform polymer fibres for advanced materials development”
Anastasia Smolina won the CAP CEWiP (Committee to Encourage Women in Physics) Best Poster Presentation for her poster “Neurovascular dynamics of mild traumatic brain injury.”
