Undergraduate Teaching Assistantship Application
From time to time, the department hires undergraduate teaching assistants if we do not have sufficient graduate-student TAs to meet our requirements. Preference is given to Physics students who have completed 2nd year, but others may apply.
Interested students should apply ahead of each term (March to April, July to August, and November to December). Click here to complete the application
Hiring decisions are mostly made just before the start of each term (end of August, beginning of January, and in April for the summer terms), although sometimes we need to hire in the middle of a term.

Summer Research Opportunities – General Information
Each Summer, we have a variety of opportunities that enable undergraduate students to work with a research group, including NSERC USRAs, Research Experience Awards, internships, McWork positions, and others. If you are interested in spending the Summer at McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario, and you have strong undergraduate grades, we invite you to apply through our Department of Physics & Astronomy. We offer exciting research opportunities in astrophysics, quantum materials, biophysics, medical physics, and subatomic physics.
A list of projects available for the upcoming Summer is posted each December. We have one application for all our Departmental summer undergraduate research opportunities. The deadline to apply is typically in February, but the actual date will be announced on the Physics & Astronomy homepage each year when applications open.
All applications will be required to include:
1. An up-to-date electronic (unofficial) transcript.
2. A current CV
3. A brief statement of research interests
Note: Reference letters are not required.
NSERC USRA Application Information
These prestigious awards give exceptional undergraduates the opportunity to work a fully-funded 16-week term with a professor on a research project. A list of projects available for the upcoming Summer is posted each December. The deadline to apply is typically in February, but the actual date will be announced on the Physics & Astronomy homepage each year when applications open.
Physics And Astronomy Research Experience Award
As part of the Department’s commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusive excellence, we have established the Physics and Astronomy Research Experience Award for undergraduate Faculty of Science students who identify as racialized, Black, and/or Indigenous and have an interest in research. McWork Program
The McMaster Work Program (McWork Program) gives opportunities to students who demonstrate financial need to work on campus part-time (max 10 hours/week) during the fall/winter terms and full-time (max 35 hours/week) over the summer. Please refer to the McWork Program website for more information.
