For the first time in a decade Canadians were treated to a rare sight as Mercury cut across the face of the Sun, and the McMaster Sidewalk Astronomers were there to make sure that everyone had a chance to get a good look. The group set up their 10″ reflector telescope (complete with solar filter to protect the observers’ eyes) at the corner of campus near ETB for the morning and early afternoon to let curious passers-by take a peek as Mercury’s orbit cut between the Earth and the Sun, visible as a small ink black disc cutting across the bright backdrop of our nearest star.
Thanks to McMaster’s Sidewalk Astronomy group for sharing their passion with the community and giving the public the chance to catch such and astounding view!
