On Friday, April 10th the Graduate Women In Physics & Astronomy (GWIPA) in conjuction with WISE and Let’s Talk Science organized a fun-filled day of hands on activities, lectures, and tours for 100 grade 10 girls.
Despite huge advancements in promoting women in the STEM fields, there is still work to be done. At all levels of STEM women are underrepresented with about 40% of all STEM graduates being women and only ~20% of all physics and engineering undergraduates being women (source:APS). Studies have shown that by addressing this gender imbalance girls increase their interests in STEM careers (source:Physical Review Speical Topics – Physics Education Research). Events like the Girls in Science day help to build confidence levels and fundamentally increase excitiment for STEM!
