Description:
Experimental optical quantum information science has seen rapid growth over the last 15 years. To a large extent, this success was achieved by our ability to reliably prepare certain photonic quantum states using nonlinear processes such as spontaneous parametric down conversion (SPDC). In this talk, I will give an overview of quantum computing, followed by an introduction to nonlinear optics and SPDC. I will finish by sharing some of our new work that uses simulated annealing to design nonlinear crystals that could generate photons with purity orders-of-magnitude higher than conventional methods.
