Title: Topology in Condensed Matter
Speaker: Dr. Tami Pereg-Barnea – McGill University
Institute: McGill University – Physics Department
Location: ABB 102
Description:
The Importance of topology manifests itself in a variety of newly discovered condensed matter systems, namely – topological insulators and superconductors. While topological properties of condensed matter systems were practically overlooked in the past, their importance and richness have been widely acknowledged in recent years. Non-trivial topology leads to unusual effects ranging from robust surface states to the possible realization of Majorana Fermions. In this exciting point of time new topological effects and systems are predicted theoretically and realized experimentally at an increasing rate.
In this talk I will introduce, in simple terms, the concept of topology in condensed matter and survey recent developments. In particular, ideas of inducing topological order in otherwise trivial systems will be discussed.
