This talk will present an intuitive explanation of the promise of a new generation of proposed technologies intended to exploit fundamentally quantum mechanical phenomena in order to perform tasks such as communication, metrology and computation in a dramatically more efficient manner than the conventional devices in use today. We will also discuss the physical principals behind the devices and the latest progress towards realizing some of these ambitious goals.
