Quantum states in magnets can be both highly coherent and seemingly isolated from their environments as well strongly dephased. The circumstances under which such behaviours obtain are reviewed for the cases of model, insulating magnets. The presentation is based on collaborations with Xu et al (Science 317, 1049 ) and Ronnow et al (Ibid 308, 392-395 ).
