Title: Micro- to macro-vascular imaging
Description: The fluidity of blood contributes to maintenance of homeostatic integrity in physiological systems. The complex nature of blood flow in vasculature is primarily described by hemodynamic relationships. As the micro- and macro-vasculature serve different purposes within physiological systems, vascular hemodynamics are also differentially assessed based on vessel classification (e.g. larger artery versus the capillary bed). As such, specialized imaging techniques and analytical methods are necessary for experimental collection of relevant hemodynamic variables along the vascular system. This colloquium presentation will discuss some of the research questions in the field of vascular physiology, and specifically in the vasculature of skeletal muscle and brain. The presentation will discuss how imaging techniques have overcome certain technical limitations during experimental collection of hemodynamic data and how such advances carry relevance to clinical models. Finally, the presentation will close with future directions of vascular imaging in humans.
