Title: Connecting stellar clusters and their host galaxies
Abstract:
Stellar clusters are large groups of stars that are gravitationally bound to each other. The brightest stellar clusters were first observed in the Milky Way, and they have now been observed in a variety of environments in the local Universe: from the current cluster formation sites in the disks of the Antennae galaxies to the old GC population that mostly populates the halo of the Milky Way. Their ubiquity implies that their evolution is strongly linked to that of their host galaxy. In our current framework to understand these objects, we assume that the regular process of cluster formation over the history of the Universe leads to the diverse cluster demographics that are observed nowadays in the local Universe. Under this hypothesis, in this talk I will describe how we can model the formation and co-evolution of stellar clusters within their host galaxies through cosmic time using numerical simulations of galaxy formation. I will also discuss what can be learned from these simulations, and I will end by presenting some future projects on connecting the stellar cluster populations to their host galactic environment.
