Title: Galaxy Evolution in the Group Environment
Speaker: Dr. Laura Parker
Institute: McMaster University
Location: ABB 102
Description:
It has long been known that the observed properties of galaxies, such as their star formation rates and morphologies, depend on the environment in which we find them. There is evidence that many of the transformations that convert star-forming galaxies like our Milky way to passively evolving red galaxies take place preferentially in the galaxy group environment. I will review some of the key observational results obtained in recent years on the evolution in morphology, dynamics and star-formation rates of group galaxies since the time when the Universe was half its present age. These studies help us to constrain the physical mechanisms transforming galaxies over cosmic time.
