Title: How big is the Proton?
Speaker: Dr. Itay Yavin
Institute: McMaster University
Location: ABB 102
Description:
Since the discovery of the nucleus some one hundred years ago, it was appreciated that the proton has a finite size. Over the years scientists developed increasingly sophisticated and accurate ways of measuring its size. A new technique, using muonic hydrogen, has yielded a surprising result in 2010 which differed significantly from previous measurements. No conclusive resolution for this discrepancy has emerged so far. In this talk I will introduce the subject, review the current status, and discuss a possible resolution of this puzzle that require physics beyond the Standard Model of particle physics.
