Inflationary cosmology is a tremendously successful model for the very early universe, making detailed predictions completely consistent with current high-precision cosmological data. I will review the basic idea of inflation, and ask the question: is inflation the only way to get a
universe that looks like ours? If not, what characteristics must an alternative have to give the same outcome as inflation?
