Title: Musical Physics
Speaker: Dr. Chris Waltham
Institute: University of British Columbia
Department of Physics & Astronomy
Location: ABB 102
Description:
The science of music is a broad field encompassing mechanics, acoustics, the biology and psychology of the senses, art, culture, history etc etc. It provides a great educational introduction to waves and vibrations simply because most people respond strongly to it, and many students already have some musical training. With fast, cheap computers and sensors, meaningful measurements are easily accessible, even in an average home. I will show some of the demonstration and measurement possibilities, and talk about my experiences as a harp builder.
