Title: Linking multiple wavelengths to study star formation and dense molecular gas across the galaxy population
Abstract:
Molecular gas emission offers the best way to study actively and future star-forming gas. In this talk I will highlight results from our large survey EMPIRE and related ALMA efforts to map high density gas tracers (e.g., HCN, HCO+, HNC) systematically across nearby disk galaxies. These rich datasets probe variations in the dense gas fraction and its efficiency to form stars in a range of galactic environments. Expanding to the mm and sub-mm, I will present ongoing efforts to capture the emission from challenging, density selective molecules such as N2H+. The disks of two nearby galaxies show a strong correlation between N2H+ and commonly used dense gas tracers like HCN at sub-kpc and kpc scales. I will discuss these findings in the context of recent Galactic observations, and the connection to the ISM traced by multi-wavelength missions.
