Title: Precision Cosmology and the Structure of Spiral Galaxies
Speaker: Dr. Kristine Spekkens

Description:
High-precision cosmological measurements coupled with simulations of the growth of structure in the Universe now explain an impressive array of astrophysical phenomena. However, there are still serious discrepancies between the predictions of this “concordance model” and the observed properties of spiral galaxies. In this talk I will give an overview the standard cosmological framework, highlight key differences between its predictions and the structure of nearby disk galaxies inferred from their kinematics, and discuss promising avenues for tackling these long-standing problems using new observational and computational tools.
