Title: Quantum critical phenomena and renormalization group flows
Speaker: Dr. Ribhu Kaul

Description:
The invention of the renormalization group and its applications to diverse branches of inquiry is regarded as one of the crowning achievements of theoretical physics in the last half century. In this colloquium I will give an introductory exposition to some basic aspects of the RG and show how it leads to intuitive pictorial representations of the physics in â??renormalization flowâ? diagrams. Applications of the RG flows to my own research in condensed matter physics, including to quantum magnetism and to graphene will be used to illustrate the continuing usefulness and power of this way of thinking.
