Dear Prospective Graduate Students:
At Physics & Astronomy, we know the importance of graduate students to the strength and diversity of a research environment. It isn’t an exaggeration to say that our graduate students do much of the work that moves our research areas forward. We work very hard to offer a welcoming environment for present and future students.
We are a medium-sized department, with 26 research faculty members and about 70 graduate students. Every university department has its own character. We are well-known as a very research-intensive Department that is situated at a research-intensive University. Our faculty members and graduate students conduct cutting-edge research over a wide range of research areas in physics and astronomy, and publish their results in top journals. Since we aren’t a large department, we are also famous for being a very friendly and welcoming place. By coming here, you benefit from the best of both worlds, including a healthy balance between work and play.
We offer both Masters and Ph.D. programs. Most students start in September, but some arrive in January and May. Graduate applications are accepted beginning in October of each year, and most of our offers are sent by March for admission the following September.
All of our students, whether local or from abroad, are supported financially through teaching assistantships and a research fellowship paid by the supervisor’s research grant. Many students also hold major external or internal scholarships. Graduate students benefit from McMaster’s support system for graduate studies.
Please don’t hesitate to contact us if you have any questions. Best wishes for your future plans.
